A Guide To School Fashion

Jul 09, 2009

As the new school year steadily approaches and back-to-school shopping begins, I would like to take some time to help out the fashion-challenged who are returning to school. The fact is, different events and times of the year lend themselves to different outfits, so to sort all that out and keep you savvy, I've created this guide.

Back to school: Though it may be tempting to throw on old sweatpants or the stinky shorts you've been wearing all summer, make the effort to look at least a little pulled-together. This is when teachers get their first impressions and besides, you'll feel lazier and less willing to be there if you don't actually get dressed. Wear something true to your personality and interesting so that people can get to know you. If you're nervous about a new year, a new school, new teachers, etc., throw on something you feel extra fabulous in for a little extra confidence.

Dances: What to wear (and what not to wear) to dances could be a whole other article; that's not what this is about. I'm talking here about your attire before school dances. Especially if you're trying to get a date, dress a little more fun and flirty. Look approachable and anything but desperate. Try some big jewelry, bright colors, or new shoes, or ask your friends to help you with a makeover. Not only will it increase your chances of getting a date, but it will give you a new boost of confidence.

Holidays: There's nothing wrong with going all out for the holidays and breaking out your reindeer antlers or your jackolantern sweater. It's a celebration of a holiday, and it's funny. However, if goofy and gaudy isn't your style, feel free to rejoice by wearing holiday-themed jewelry, colors, or insignia. Everyone's glad the holidays are here; celebrate!

Testing: The only time (aside from when you're sick) that it's really okay to wear old sweatpants or your pajamas to school is during long tests
like the PSSAs or AP tests. It's comfortable to sit in for long periods of time and when the tests are over, you're ready to go back to sleep.

Things you should never wear to school: Ever...I mean it.
Ugz boots--they're just ugly.
See through clothes--nobody wants to see it and you'll get made fun of
Miniskirts--unless they're really comfortable, save them for a date or a party. And I don't mean comfortable for a few minutes, I mean comfortable for eight or more hours, in all positions you find yourself in throughout the day.
Necklaces of buffalo teeth--you may laugh but at my school it happened, and it smelled.
Shoes that would kill you in a fire--I'm all for ridiculously high heels and flip flops, but make sure you can walk in whatever shoes you choose. Not only is this important in case of fire, but it will also get you to your classroom on time and keep you from causing a traffic jam in the hallway.
