I was just wondering if anyone plays percussion at all, like in school or just in a band. and this can be anything like drumset, marimba, xylophone, timpani, or anything on drumline like snare, tenor, or bass.

...well, I'm not a percussionist but I am an ex-band geek (courtesy of a director who thought her student's opinions weren't important...) I played french horn and LOVED every minute of it....do you march?

well, you could say that, i played during marching season but i was in pit this year so i didnt really march on the field for our shows. and the only reason i got stuck in pit was cuz i just moved to a new school this year and i came too late for drumline auditions, which was pretty lame.

yeahh you shouldnt've quit. (not to rub it in) but good likeable directors can be hard to come by, unless yours was just like unreasonably diabolical or something.
(PS, im playing snare next year! ;) )

Well, you've got to understand that my freshman year, my director was AMAZING!!! He was the founding director at the school and knew that music is about more than making sounds, it was about feeling and telling a story, and he would talk with us about that...and he would do anything to help his students if they needed help...he would listen to you talk with an open mind...(heck, I even dated his stepson that year!) But he announced that he was retiring at the end of the year and so we were all helping him find a new director...it came down to the wire and he ended up choosing this lady that even he has since regretted. She doesn't care about the students, she thinks that only HER interpretation of a piece matters, she tries to be your best buddy in a scary preppy kind of way...oh yeah, and she changes schedules every time the wind changes and expects you to NEVER have a complaint...I put up with it through my soph. year and it was tough...but then, I see her before school started this year and she tells me that we have camp til 10pm the entire week before school (to which I say, some of us don't drive and that is not fair to do to the freshmen before their first week of HS). I tried to talk to her and she said "I'm sorry that our plans don't fit your schedule, but that is just the way it is" (which I wouldn't have minded her talking to me so disrespectfully--even though I was one of her officers--but she said that in front of my mom...) Then she handed my mom the schedule and we saw that she wanted us to be after school 4 out of 5 days every week for marching season. SORRY! no can do lady, I have 7 APs...
SO yeah, it was NOT cool.... :D

I just finished my last marching season in december. I played flute since freshman year.
I was also in winter drumline for 3 years. Marched cymbals.
Fun times. =D
Wow...I miss marching sooo much. I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but I'm a horn player and wellllllll I LOVE IT!!!
