Wow someone else plays viola.
Too bad i stopped caring once I got into jazz band on guitar.
I'm a half decent viola player, i can hold my own and improvise better than almost anyone out there.
I would die if I majored in performance, waaay to much effort there. I wanna be a teacher, and primary on guitar.
After getting into jazz, classical music became far to rigid for me, and i have a problem with most kids in school orchestras and classical instrument players. namely the fact that anyone can play an instrument, everyone can be a performer, not everyone can be a musician though. There's a big difference, and the difference is in the soul, not in skill or anything.
I consider myself a musician with guitar, and partially with viola (when I'm improving) because the music actually reflects the heart, written classical music does not promote expression of the spirit in my eyes.

Wow...seems like you know alot about music. I also own an electric viola and I use to be in a rock orchestra with it. I can improvise. I learned all my pentatonic scales and various finger patterns so it is easier to play more complicated melodies. But jazz/rock not my passion, it is ok…not for me though. I don’t play it as much as I use to.
I really love classical music it is what I want to do. I do consider myself a musician. I practice 4 hours a day on my own and I rehearse with my trio and quartet daily. I am a member of an orchestra in a surrounding town, and I mentor kids on viola free of charge. I went to a very prestigious music camp this summer where I became first chair out of 20 violas....
I consider myself a musician; and I whole-heartedly agree with you that music has to come from your soul (skill is helpful as well :-)) my music does come from my soul. When I am sitting in Trig all I am thinking about is what I am going to play next on my viola, I am constantly scratching down lyrics to the many songs that I write (I am also a vocal performer), viola is my passion though....and it comes from my soul....classical music is what I love....
Classical music does admit expression, depending on the person playing the piece. If you break the song down, the phrases are telling a story. If you are a viola player you obviously have played the Walton. Any viola player can play the Walton (if they can get their fingers moving that fast), but not everyone can search deep inside themselves to see what the music is conveying, when the composers wrote these pieces, (many moons ago), they were expressing their life into the music, and it is your job as a classical performer to search inside yourself, and feel the music, feel what they were meaning when they composed a F# in stead of an F, it is just as hard as improvising, harder I believe ..
Some would consider classical music the roots of all rock, jazz ect today. And it is, so the music that you think has no life and no meaning, remember your jazz is here because of it.
Hope you enjoyed reading this, sorry for how long it is, I get defensive when people attack my passion.
Good luck with your future music endeavors.

1. It wasn't an attack :P
2. I am gonna challenge your statement. I think it's more commonly accepted that african music brought to america by the slaves then mix with religious music generated most rock/jazz and such.
The only reason I say this is because my friend wrote a paper last year on african musical influence on american music.
african tribal music based on rhythmic patterns -->Black slave music (tribal music+church hymns from the 2nd great awakening promoting the expression of emotion in church) --> gospel --> military moral music is mixed in somewhere around here --> blues (gospel with different chord pattern (I-IV-V) and subject material) --> jazz (and all it's ENDLESS subcategories) -->jazz rock --> rock and roll (we're talking beatles, elvis, some of your johnny cash) --> acid rock (and funk) --> etc...
