what was the major cause of the civil war?
it's a truly simple question, it can go in a number of directions...
so i'm gonna go with the north and south having different opinions on whether owning slaves is moral and allowed in the const. and things like that.
but. i need a good thesis statement. anyone willing to help?<3??!
::::edit::::
i have like... 8 documents so far.
it's not that i'm not willing to do research, i just suck at starting my paper.
i think you should do more research and show us that you've done it so that we may be able to help you with your thesis..but by the time you've done your research, you would have already have your thesis planted in your head..:S

That's the same problem I have... My AP teacher says my essays are weak in introductions but the main points and events I give, he says they're really solid :p.
Yeah, what imkonadian said... I think you'll need to give us more info...
But I can't help think that the Civil War was fought over the Constitution rather than the institution of slavery...
The below statement is false.
The above statement is true.

Well, that really isn't a whole lot to go on. BUT, you're in luck 'cause I'm in a good mood. Here's how I write my thesis statement.
I look at my topic, and I answer it as if you couldn't see the topic using my three points. For instance (It's from a book I have):
Topic: Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal represented a radical departure from previous American traditions in government and political economy. Evaluate the statement
Thesis: The New Deal represents a radical departure from previous American traditions because programs such as the Agricultural Adjustment Act, the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Social Security system created significant government involvement in the everyday life of citizens.
Yeah, I know, it's long, but it does get the job done. Most of the time I can also condense it by mentioning the topic in the previous sentence. That way, I can say 'it' instead of 'The New Deal' or perhaps 'previous American traditions'. If you are ever having trouble, you can post it or e-mail it to me at [email protected]" class="bb-email">[email protected] and I can look it over a make some suggestions. That goes for anyone.

thanks so much, that was helpful, and i probably will end up taking up that emailing offer
Well, it's not just slavery. My History Teacher focuses a lot on three stratas: Economic, Social, and Political. You have the social issue down (slavery), but take into account the Economy of the south and the north. Both of them were very different if you look at your research. Finally I would take a look at the actions congress took leading up to the Civil War- there wasn't a lot of negotiation going on after the Compromise of 1850.
For your thesis- Make sure that you answer the promp while showing that you know history. Your thesis should be at max only two sentences long. More than that is wasteful.
Good luck, the Civil War is an interesting time to look at. =D
I agree with A/C, I would do my essay with economic, political, and social factors as my three main topics and elaborate on them in my paper. It also makes for a nice, short thesis statement.
Oh, and slavery was as much an economic factor as a social one.
