Pretty straight forward. I consider myself to be an independent, but leaning to the conservative side of things. A little libertarian in me, too.

Now, I continue my debate with Ares and AP_Work_R.
1) A high number of votes does not signify that the country is ready for democracy. They have to be able to organize themselves, ALWAYS take peoples views into account, and attempt to not revert back to a dictatorship. It is very hard to do.
2) I would also like to figure that the Korean War was a plus for us. I'm sketchy on the details, so this is your chance to enlighten me. I'll hear you out then do some research. If you again refuse to defend your position I will ignore all arguements supported by it.
3) There are more ways to destroy a man than killing him. If I'm not mistaken, we have a fair amount of political power at our disposal, tell me that we couldn't try using some of that first.
4) I'm giving you grace for Vietnam Ares, however, once you have logged on then off, all evidence involving Vietnam goes out the window.

Ok...whew, wasn't here for a while, but I'll answer your post:

If high number of votes doesn't signify the citizens' desire for a democratic government, then what does it signify? Isn't voting one step closer to democracy?

Well, it's known as the "Forgotten War" because of WWII and Vietnam War, and lasted 3 years. Well, Korean War was definitely a plus for blacks in the military. If I'm not mistaken, President Truman signed the Executive Order (er, forgot number and date) and ordered troops to treat African-Americans in service with equal treatment and opportunity. Deployed military units moved from separated to an integrated group as war began to end, hence, one of the crucial events in history that forshadowed equality and removal of discrimination (though we still struggle with today...:() against race, specifically the African-Americans.
U.S. didn't want Communism to be spread, and the war prevented North Korea from influencing (taking over) South Korea. Speaking for the South Korean's side, the war brought democratic government to the country, though it was paid with the blood of both Americans, South Koreans, and the troops sent from U.N. South Koreans are grateful (but recently, I don't like the direction the Korean government is headed towards...). From the war, U.S.'s image heightened; it showed its intolerance towards expansion of communism, plus it showed the "philanthropic" America - that America was a country that came to other country in need of aid.

Are you talking about Saddam? If you are, I don't think you can stop a dictator without going to war. I mean think about it. Dictators can't really work well with democracy; Saddam likes it this way, but democracy doesn't approve of it, thus, dictators go with their own way despite opposition. They don't want to listen because they are in power.
The below statement is false.

Welcome back AP_Work_R. Been bored here without you...
All right, same numbers for same points.
1) I never said that voting wasn't a step in the right direction. I said that is doesn't signify that they're fully prepared to uphold a democratic society. I'm sorry if that came across wrong, but I've been really tired the past few days. What makes me say that is that it's easy to say "I want that" or to be able to speak their minds, they have to be willing to listen, to work together, to sacrifice. Democracy requires much responsibility from the governement, but also from the population. The population must be willing to not only speak their minds, but protest when they are being mistreated. They must understand that to have democracy, you must be willing to sacrifice that which you hold dear at times. It is easy to say that democracy is great: I speak my mind and someone listens and does something about it. But you have to be willing to be disappointed at times when things don't often go your way. And lastly, democracy requires a lot of trust for those with power. We trust our representatives to do the right things, to listen to and help us, to guide our country through disaster and crisis. That is why just saying that you want something isn't enough. It's going to take alot of work on the part of the entire country to successfully become a democracy.
2) I will take your information into account and research on my own over the holiday. Then you shall know my position. And that first sentence should read "I would also like to know how you figure that the Korean War was a plus for us." Sorry if it's caused any confusion, but it doesn't appear to have done so...
3) Bush could have at least tried before resorting to war...

One more thing for point 1. A quote from Benjamin Franklin:
Sudden power is apt to be insolent, sudden liberty saucy; that behaves best which has grown gradually.

We elected Bush into office so he could do something...but what exactly has he done? He's gone into a war that even the people who voted him in didnt want, he's tried to shove corrupt people in his administration down the public's throat, and he's banning things that the public wants.
I will never vote for an annoying guy like him ever
