essay Question NEED HELP!!!

I really dont understand this question and i was wondering if anyone explain it to me.. preferably in detail. THANK YOU SO MUCHH!!

"The Enlightenment as an intellectual movement, represented freedom from political, social and economic constraints that heretofore had arrested the march of human progress."
Assess the validity of this statement.

If anyone could help i would be so thankful! Which parts of this statement are calid and why and which are not and why arent they valid?
