Mani saw a need for a prophet for all humanity and he promoted a syncretic blend of Zoroastrian, Christian, and Buddhist elements as a religious faith that would serve the needs of a cosmopolitan world. Mani was a dualist who viewed the world as the site of a cosmic struggle between the forces of light and darkness, good and evil. He promoted an ascetic lifestyle and insisted that disciples observe high ethical standards. Mani was also a fervent missionary who traveled widely to promote his faith.
