The Latin West c14 Eric Zhang Hou 5 Intro A lack of unity (kings for each city, a ?prince for every house?) <- preoccupation w/ welfare/materials, cynical about human nature -> not stopping Turkish armies Despite divisions, war, disasters, 12500-1500 = progress. Material prosperity -> architecture, learning institutions, & cultural boosts. Wars -> +power weapons & unified monarchies Muslim/Byz neighbors called W. Euros Franks, but they called themselves Latins Latin West was emerging from econ/cultural shadow of Islamic neighbors, w/ elements like ambition, competition, & use of borrowed tech/learning Rural Growth & Crisis +Cultivated land, new farming techs, & machinery/mechanical forms of energy For rural Europeans (>90%) this period = struggle
