Bosnia, a Slavic Austro-Hungarian province in the Balkans, was desired by nationalist Serbians. One such Serbian assassinated Archduke Ferdinand upon his visit to Sarajevo, and as a result the Austrians launched a punitive assault on Serbia. This brought Serbia?s Eastern Orthodox ally Russia in the fight, and thus Germany on behalf of Austria, and the Great War had begun. 4. The Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in the Great War because of connections between their leaders and military.
