1) Liberty and Equality a) Call for liberty was a call for individual human rights, enlightened monarchs often believed it was their duty to regulate what people read and believed b) Liberals believed people had sovereignty- people alone had authority to make laws limiting an individual?s freedom of action C) Equality- all citizens should have identical rights and civil liberties, nobility had no special privileges based on their birth 1) Liberals were often men, did not believe male and female equal 2) Never believed everyone economically equal, but equal chance to get wealth d) Society still legally divided into groups w/ special privileges (nobility, clergy) and burdens (peasantry). Criticized economic inequality based on legal distinctions for different social groups
