Lab 16 Molecular Mass from Freezing point Depression Tasnuva Israil 02/21/2012 1. Why is it necessary to express the concentration of sulfur in units of molality instead of molarity? We express the concentration of sulfur in units of molality instead of molarity from a number of reasons. One reason is so we can use the freezing point depression and molality to calculate the molecular weight. Also, since we used the dry weight of naphthalene we do not know the volume of the solution. But since we know the weight, molality is more suitable than molarity. Yet another reason is because molality is temperature independent and won't increase like molarity can when heated.
