265861681 | Pugachev | (1742-1775) A Cossack, army deserter from the southeast frontier region of Russia who claimed to be Peter III, the dead husband of Catherine II. People rallied around him in hopes that he would be a "redeemed tsar" who could save them from oppression. A rebellion occurred which ended in the death of hundreds of noble families and, finally, his arrest, torture, and execution. | |
265861683 | John Wilkes | A member of Parliament during the reign of George III. He attacked the government in his newspaper, North Briton, and sued the crown when he was arrested. He won and was released and given damages, but when he was reelected Parliament refused to give him his seat. This controversy sparked public protest in his favor and people began to consider the need for reform in Parliament. | |
265861685 | Gordon Riots (1780) | Marches and campaigns against the bill passed by the House of Commons which granted limited toleration to Catholics. Named after an anti-catholic crusader who helped organize them. The seven-day riots left fifty buildings destroyed and 300 people dead. | |
