The Awakening The book starts out on Grand Isle in Louisiana. Edna spend her days in the company of women and only one day a week with her husband. Once the summer has drawn to a close she moves back to the city, the bulwark of men. Eventually this becomes to much for her and she moves out of her husbands house into the Pigeon house in an attempt to escape the patriarchal relationship with her spouse. The attempt is to no avail and she finds that true comfort for her can only be found in one place. Each house she stays in marks a drop in her tolerance of the social world of women.
