Place of birth: Rome, 63 BC Context: Grandnephew of Julius Caesar Julius was assassinated in 44 BC and Octavius was only 18 years old Many tried to succeed Julius and did not consider Octavian as a serious threat 36 BC, Rome was divided between Mark Antony and Octavian; Mark Antony controlled the east and Octavian controlled the west. Antony was paying too much attention to his romance with Cleopatra while Octavian was improving his statue. 32 BC, war broke out between Antony and Octavian (Great Naval Battle); 31 BC, Octavian won. 27 BC, Octavian announced he was restoring the Republic; senate gave him the title of Augustus.
