Mountain Biome Occurs along the Rocky Mountains in the western United States and Canada. A. Abiotic Factors Mountain Climate- the temperature and precipitation (both type and amount) can vary dramatically between the top of the mountain and the bottom of the mountain. a. Temperature- there is wide variations in daily temperature (day to night time temperatures). The temperature is affected by altitude. The thin air allows sunlight/ heat to reflect easily back into space. Temperature can decrease up to 1o C for every 150 meters increase in elevation. b. Precipitation- is affected by altitude. It comes mainly as snow at higher elevations for up to 9 months a year. It rains during the summer, with rain occurring in the fall and spring particularly at lower altitudes.
