Origins of the Constitution The Declaration: Created before the constitution Created because we wanted independence from Great Britain John Locke?s Influence: Locke goes through an enlightenment on the concept of government Jefferson gets his ideas from Locke for the constitution such as Social contract Natural rights: life, liberty, property (property later changed to pursuit of happiness) Consent of governed Limited government Right to revolt Problems with Confederation: Decentralized Congress couldn?t tax, regulate trade, or enforce laws Laws needed approval of 9 out of 13 states Amending the articles required consent of all states No executive branch No national court system Shay?s Rebellion The economy wasn?t doing well, farms were being foreclosed
