Ch. 2: The Constitution The foundation of the American political system rests on the Constitution, a document originally consisting of just seven articles that laid out the basic structure of our government. It established the United States as a federal system composed of three branches: the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. Over time, the Constitution has been amended to account for the growth of the nation and changes to the political system.
