During earlier periods, family life in China was centered on the clan or extended family. This model gave way to the more close-knit three generation family of grandparents, parents and children. Private property also developed during this period and land was divided equally among the sons when the father died. Chinese legend tells of the ancient Xia dynasty. It is impossible to determine the exact accuracy of these tales, but archaeologists identify the Xia with the Neolithic Longshan cultural complex before and after 2000 B.C.E.
