AP World?Unit: 600 CE to 1450 CE Chapter 13 Byzantine Empire Part 1 ? pages 317 to 330 The Byzantine Empire fended off the Persians and migrant invaders and yes they centralized their empire! How did Constantinople (modern day Istanbul after Turks conquer) reflect a glorious capital of a centralized empire? Dominant economic and commercial center in eastern Mediterranean. Also important political city, obviously. Trade was huge. It was a metropolis, much like Rome. They built huge defensive walls around the city. There were libraries, museums, palaces, churches, baths, public buildings, artistic treasures. Banks. See below. Look at where Constantinople is situated. Why is it a perfect location for the head of an empire?
