Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom?s Cabin: The daughter of Abolitionist Lyman Beecher, Stowe published her book in 1852. It was a runaway success, selling millions of copies and being translated into 20 languages and adapted for stage. The novel depicted the brutality of slavery, and its destruction of families. It aroused sentiment against slave and helped cause, and win the civil war through: convincing many Northerners not to support the Fugitive Slave Act, awakened the fire in many youths who would later join the Union army, and set popular opinion abroad against the South.
