Chapter 13: An Age of Expansionism The Spirit of Young America In the ?40s and ?50s many successful Americans called themselves the champions of Young America. The first man to use this term was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said that the nation was entering a new era of commercial development, technological progress, and territorial expansion. Young Americans wished to acquire Texas, parts of Mexico, and all of Oregon. Technological advances were in the railroad and the telegraph. During the Polk administration, new literature was being produced, unique to America. Young Americans were primarily concerned with the expansion of the US. Movement to the Far West
