Chapter 30: The Consolidation of Latin America What was different about Brazil?s independence compared to the rest of them? What was society like during this time period and in these regions? This chapter is going to focus on Latin, Central, and South America. It will focus on how they were colonized by European countries but then later gained their independence from them. It will also talk about some important social issues of this time. From Colonies to Nations Causes of Political Change ?Liberty, equality, and fraternity? St. Dominguez was France?s sugar colony in the Caribbean It became divided Haiti became a symbol of freedom and hope Spanish American Independence Struggles Independence movements Miguel de Hidalgo Augustine de Itrubide Iturbide became emperor of Mexico
