These articles are known as The Federalist Papers. In this paper, Madison comments on the checks and balances of competing factions in American politics and signs it "Publius." GUIDED READING As you read, consider the following questions: ? What are the differences between a pure democracy and a republic, according to Madison? ? What does Madison say is the advantage of a republic over a democracy?
