The Kumeyaay had a federation of autonomous self-governing clans or bands. They grew trees, grains and numerous other crops in addition to maintaining wild stock. Each family planted and maintained their fields but was always expected to share. Family ideals were extremely important to the kumeyaay The Kumeyaay still plant crops in their mere 500,000 acres of land, compared to the land they were intended to receive (8.5 million acres) they now have several reservations near San Diego and throughout California where they practice their values
