Catcher in the Rye Chapter 19-23 Response Quote: ?I didn?t say anything. I was sort of afraid he?d get up and leave on me if I didn?t shut up.? Response: (Character Perspective) From this statement, we can see that he truly lonely. Instead of trying to talk to Luce and be social, he hides his true personality from him. We can see that this is what he hates the most, but deals with it so he isn?t alone. He becomes a phony for the sake of fitting in with others. Quote: ?When I was really drunk, I started that stupid business with the bullet in my guts again.?
