They were used by Catherine Medici, she allowed them to gain power in order to be able to offset the Guise (128). As they grew, so did the tension between them and the Guise. The tension resulted in a massacre of Huguenots by the the Guise (128). This then caused a numerous amount of religious wars that broke out in France between 1567 and 1570 (128). The modern application is that not all believers in God, are the good kind. Some have deep seeded hatred between other denominations, and will even take radical means in order to exterminate them.
