The establishment of such privacy we have in our hands is due to the Privacy Act of 1974. The Privacy Act of 1974, as described by the US DOJ, ?establishes a code of fair information practices that governs the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of information about individuals that is maintained in systems of records by federal agencies? (?The United States Department of Justice?). In plain words, it simply means that the government is to use the information about you fairly.
