Having a medical problem in high school can be complicated without having to worry about grades and social responsibilities. High school is already a rough time in a teenager’s life, and on top of that you are known as the “sick girl”. Being sick in high school can jeopardize your GPA, which is a defining factor in the college application process. The key to dealing with a MP in high school is to talk to your teachers and counselors. Let them know that you expect to be treated equally but let them know that if you do miss school you are not slacking off. Some teachers may not be empathetic to your situation but those who do understand ask them for their help. If you miss an important class, stay after school or come in before school starts. If the teachers are unwilling to help you out then talk to your counselors about free after school tutoring or older students who are willing to help out in the community. The secret to having a successful high school career while being ill is to use your counselors and teachers to your advantage. They are the there to help you succeed while in high school and in the real world.
