Most high school seniors, including myself, recently have undergone the stressful college application process. Now, we find ourselves waiting for the dreaded decision letters. Personally, I think the “wait” is more stressful than the actual process of applying. When I was working on my college applications, the stressful part is getting everything in on time. Now that everything is done, I feel helpless. There’s nothing more I can do. Many times, when listing our extracurriculars, we leave out one or two. Since we were under enormous pressure when we were writing our personal essays, we might have left something out. Now that most applications are submitted, we realize how much better our essays could have been if we did not left that special something out. In the medical and psychological fields, there are many syndromes, like the Empty nest syndrome and the Stockholm syndrome, but as far as I am concerned there is no syndrome for the temporary depression or the sense of feeling helpless during and after the application process. There should be a special syndrome just for college applicants to emphasize the extent to which we stress about the application process. Maybe it should be called the “Powerless Applicant Syndrome”? Anyhow, I consider the “wait” to be more stressful than the actual application process itself. Feel free to comment on this matter.
