Plot: A Separate Peace begins with our narrator, Gene Forrester, returning to the prestigious Devon School, where he spent his boyhood, as an adult to reflect on the past. Through his memories, the reader is introduced to two best friends who solidify their friendship by jumping out of a famously dangerous tree, into the river. Finny is a gifted athlete, blessed with natural charisma, and, above all else, he is pure ? a truly good-hearted person. Gene, in a rage of envy for his best friend, ends up bouncing the tree branch one night as Finny is about to jump, causing him to fall and break his leg. Summer ends and as the winter session at Devon begins, all of the boys must come to terms with the ?real world? outside of Devon.
