Channel types: braided, meandering, straight - A river is not composed of one specific type of channel?at one point it can be braided, at the next, meandering. - Basics Channel Geometry Cross-sectional area found by multiplying channel depth by width along transverse section. A= (W * D) for a rectangular shape. Wetted perimeter: ?wet? portion of channel( WP= W+2D Greater cross-sectional area compared to WP= more freely flowing stream. Channel width, depth, average current velocity increase with stream discharge. Hydraulic radius: cross-sectional area divided by wetted perimeter Directly related to flow velocity, channel slope, inversely to channel roughness. Channel slope/gradient: difference in elevation b/w two pts on a stream divided by difference b/w them.
