Can anyone help me with the following question---(it's supposed to be a 5-paragraph themed essay)
What ideas were expressed in Thoreau's Civil Disobedience? How did they relate to the Mexican War? Do you agree or dissagree with Thoreau's views. Explain.
When we studied Thoreau the big thing i got from him was think for yourself. He felt as through people could decide what to do in regards to laws. if for example a person saw a law they did not agree with, they had the right to disobey civily. in regards to the mexican war, one could say that the settlers of the mexican Texas were disobeying the goverment. When they moved, they agreed to become Roman-Catholic and follow Mexican Laws. Well by declaring independance and calling on the U.S. for help, they disobeyed they Laws of the Goverment. Given this was not done very civily, it still showed how going thorugh the right (or wrong) channels could lead to revolution. ME personally, i do not really agree with his essay. I think that if a goverment is willing to extend its borders to new neighbors and allies, the citzens should respect its laws. that's just me, but go ahead and put your own spin on it. Hope this helped. sorry i couldn't give you too many info. but this is the main gist.-----Jake
man, all i have to say is I FEEL YOUR PAIN. Thoreau is some hard reading...especially connecting it to USH.
