john calhoun on sectional conflict 1850

i 've to work on his speech on March 4, 1850, during the debate in the senate on the admission of california (a "free state") into the Union.
And more on the background of it . it's for a presentation and my part is the background.
when must i start the background? i was thinking about the mexican war yesterday but i'm not sure . And can you help me on the sectional territories? some told me to think about that, but i'm lost in all the period!

if anyone had work on it , or got a lesson on the period please it would be great to explain or send it to me , thx a lot .
