I feel ignorant so...explain Republican to me

buddwyer138's picture

I feel as if I am only a liberal because I don't know the other side of things.

What is it to be Republican? I want to know the other side. I will only align myself with a party that matters, so forget Green or Independent. I want my say to count and I know Democrat but, like I said...Republican?

The Republican Party basically supports a weaker government. They support lower taxes and less government spending and programs.

I like this party's views better because I have always felt that you should get what you deserve.

Just trying to clarify a bit. Republicans want a weaker national government and strong state governments. It's called devolution revolution.

I love you!! In my opinion, regardless of what a person believes they should still weigh all the arguments to make sure they can reliably align themselves.

[sarcasm]Really, because stronger federal governments just like Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, Communist China, etc. are so much better, right.[/sarcasm]

Republicans may support weakening the federal government and giving more power to the state but they prefer less government power overall.

uhhh devolution = giving power to subordinates...so i'm not sure hwo that offended you and made you add "sarcasm" but in anycase...um, yeah, you typically should align yourself with whichever policies you agree with. um correct me if i'm wrong, but typically you align yourself with a party based on social and economic issues and their opinion on those issues.

What's picture

Comunisum isn't a bad IDEA, just bad in practice.

I mean, who doesn't like the idea of worker rule?

Yeah, Communism looks GREAT on paper. It's just the fact that it doesn't work. People have no reason to work hard if they can't gain anything by it. Patriotism and ideology can only carry people so far. (at least until they start brainwashing people. ever read 1984? :p) Anyway, Republican and Democrat are mainly structured towards more or less governmental power. Republican = Less for governments in general, but stronger state than federal. Also less taxes and welfare systems. Democrat = More taxes and social services from strong federal government, like welfare.

USUALLY, Conservative and Republican go together, as do Liberal and Democrat, although they can be the other way around. Honestly, for the issues most people talk about today (abortion, gay marriage, etc.), you should probably look into Conservative v. Liberal political beliefs.

Republicans are hella Federalist. lol Okay...that makes sense. Durr. Thank you!

Mike200's picture

Not really. Federalists were for strong government.

Well the ideas of communism seemed noble but you are right in that they didn't work. What I was trying to point out was the situations that occur when government gets too strong. The communist Soviet Union, Cambodia, etc. resulted in the murders of millions of people by the govenrment. The same happened in Nazi Germany. What basically happened was that crime among individuals was reduced, but it was replaced by more crime committed by the government. The government basically had a monopoly on crime.

Communism and Socialism didn't work. The democratic policy's ideas have come so close to socialism.

Republican policies can be seen in some of the economic reform that has occurred over the past few years and it has been extremely sucessful. When Bush became president he decreased taxes and cut some federal programs. And from the recent changes in the economy, this policy has been great. In 2000 the US dropped into a depression, and Republican policy has led to an upswing of economy. The National GDP has been increasing by leaps and bounds for the past 2 and a half years and unemployment has dropped to %5, which is the optimal level. Everytime I see something like this it just proves the point that capitalism works. Another example is Japan, it economy constantly strengthens and it has very low taxes.
