Jefferson and Madison were trying to prevent the US from getting into war against the French and/or British because in any case, it would most likely be disastrous to the US. Howver, because Britain kept seizing our ships, impressing sailors, and aiding the Indians, the War Hawks emerged and wanted to fight Britain. Jefferson tried to avoid war with the Embargo Act, which crippled US economy. Madison caved in to the war Hawks and went into the War of 1812. Luckily for the U.S., the war ened w/o us losing and land or soverignty.
