During the late 1700s, two political parties emerged. These were the Federalists and the Jeffersonians, also known as the Democratic Republicans. The federalists were in favor of a strong central government, a national bank, national debt, a strong navy, loose interpretation of the constitution, and were also pro-british. The Jeffersonians on the other hand were in favor of a weak central government, a strict interpretation of the constitution, state banks, a minimal navy, free speech and press, and were pro-french.
