The two most numerous ethnicities in the US are Hispanic or Latinos (15%) and African Americans (13%).

The world contained only 50 countries until the 1940s.
Problems of Defining States
State ? An area organized into a political unit and ruled by an established government that has control over its internal and foreign affairs.
The term ?country? is a synonym for ?state.?
Sovereignty ? Being independent from control of its internal affairs by other states.

Development ? Process of improving conditions through the diffusion of technology and knowledge.
More Developed Country (MDC) ? Progress further along the development process.
Less Developed Country (LDC) ? Earlier stage of development.
Human Development Index (HDI) ? A measurement of a country?s level of development, created by the UN, and includes three factors, economic, social, and demographic.

Began before recorded history.
Origins of Agriculture.
Agriculture ? Modification of Earth?s surface through cultivation of plants and rearing of animals for sustenance or economic gain.
Originated when humans domesticated plants and animals.
Crop ? Any plant cultivates by humans.

Originated in northern England and southern Scotland in the latter 18th century.
Diffused to Europe and North America in the 19th century.

I. Where Did Services Originate?
a. Service ? Any activity that fulfills a human?s want or need for money.
(1) In America, ? are in a service.
(2) In LDCs, less than ? are in a service.
b. Settlement ? A permanent collection of buildings where people live, sleep, and obtain services.
A. Three Types of Services
a. Contributes 2/3 of the GDP for MDCs, and less than ? in LDCs.
Vocabulary
Agricultural Density - The ratio of the number of farmers to the total amount of land suitable for agriculture.
Agricultural Revolution - The time when human beings first domesticated plants and animals and no longer relied entirely on hunting and gathering.
Arithmetic Density - The total number of people divided by the total land area.
Census - A complete enumeration of a population.
Crude Birth Rate (CBR) - The total number of live births in a year for every 1,000 people alive in the society.
