Free and Slave States
Following the Missouri Compromise in 1820, states were admitted to
the Union as either free states or slave-holding states. As new states
joined the union, there was a national debate over whether these states
should be free states or slave states. The Compromise of 1850 was
passed to determine how the issue of slavery would apply to land gained
following the Mexican War.
