The Awakening Tone Essay In the novel The Awakening, Chopin uses an unsure tone to describe Edna's view of motherhood. She portrays the tone through imagery and strong diction. By using these two components Chopin shows how Edna views her family as a second priority. Although, as it was with most women at this time period, nothing should have been more important. "She was fond of her children in an uneven, impulsive way. She would sometimes gather them passionately to her heart; she would sometimes forget them" (Chopin 30) Chopin used very strong diction in this quote to show how her children are almost like a fading dream. Every now and again to bring back this spur of love and longing and at other times its faded and almost nonexistent.
