Expansion & public opinion

what are some of the reasons (economic, social, political, military, etc.) for European countries to pursue a policy of overseas expansion? Are the reasons the same for every country? Explain the differences if there are any (Germany, Italy, England, and France). What are some of the benefits for the native people in the colonial areas, according to the authors? How do these arguments compare to reasons put forward for American foreign policy today?
