Padrone System?!

So anyways, I'm on Chapter 25 now and there was this Padrone System that isn't mentioned in our book, but is a term we need to know. The Chapter is about Urbanization, Immigration, and Culture. It's from the late 1880s to early 1990s.

I looked on google and it said something about the immigrants forming sects and each sects are divided by race and in each sect is a Padrone or boss-like figure that finds jobs for the new immigrants, negotiate wages and conditions with their employer, etc.

I suppose this is like the Boss Tweed deal where he does all this for their vote and with their vote, he can gain a high position and become rich quick.

I just dont get that part. How can the Boss use their votes to get rich? How does Tammany Hall work? I don't get it.
