Why does a colloid have different layers?

Well, our class was finishing the chapter on properties of solutions, and this question came up.

Why does a colloid have different layers? Why doesn't it mix? Why does the ions stay with other positive/negative ions?

Can you provide a site where you got an answer?

Please and thank you!

Yulia
