guitar distortion

I love to play guitar and i am thinking of getting a distortion pedal. i don't have alot of money but i want something good. i don't really know much about pedals and i was wondering if anyone had advice. i have a fender strat and a fender amp...nothing fancy. anything would be helpful. thanks.
