Objective 1 Therapy
• Treatments of mental patients became gentler thanks to Philippe Pinel in France and Dorothea Dix in the US, Canada and Scotland
o Developed mental hospitals
o Therapeutic drugs and group therapies have basically made mental healthy hospitals obsolete
• Two main categories classify mental health therapies: psychological therapies and biomedical therapies
o Treatment depends on the disorder and the therapists viewpoint
• Psychotherapy: a planned, emotionally charger, confiding interaction between trained, socially sanctioned healer and a sufferer
o Used on disorders that are believed to be learned such as phobias
