Hindu/Buddhist terms and concepts found in Siddhartha. 1. Brahman: ultimate reality; universal soul/spirit; ultimate Truth; divinity that permeates the universe. 2. Atman: individual soul which is inseparable from universal soul. 3. Om: universal vibration; oneness of all sounds; sound of perfection. 4. ablutions: holy cleansing in sacred river. 5. Samanas: wandering ascetics who focus on self-denial as a path to enlightenment. 6. samsara: repeated cycles of birth (reincarnation) 7. maya: the illusion of duality of the physical world. 8. asceticism: self-denial except for minimum for survival. 9. hedonism: self-indulgence; excessive indulgence of the senses. 10. courtesan: a female companion who is paid to entertain wealthy men.
