Chapter 14 The Last Great Nomadic Challenges: From Chinggis Khan to Timur Mongol rule disrupted civilizations. Extended rule from central Asia, China, Tibet, Iraq, Asia Minor, and southern Russia. Dominated for a century and a half. Respected artisans and architects; massacred all but them. I. The Mongol Empire of Chinggis Khan A. Mongol Society a. survived on goats and sheep; staples of meat and dairy, traded for veggies, fruit, jewelry, etc. b. lived in yurts of sheep hides and wool; rode as soon as they could walk c. basic tribal units divided into encampments of clans, held confederations with elected leaders, subordinate women held power in the home d. valued courage in battle and ability to forge alliances
