American Pageant Chapter 19 Stowe and Helper: Literary Incendiaries Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom?s Cabin, popular book that awakened North toward the evils of slavery. The book sold millions of copies, and overseas, British people were charmed by it. The South cried foul, saying Stowe?s portrayal of slavery was wrong and unfair.
