American Pageant Chapter 19 Stowe and Helper: Literary Incendiaries Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom?s Cabin, popular book that awakened North toward the evils of slavery. The book sold millions of copies, and overseas, British people were charmed by it. The South cried foul, saying Stowe?s portrayal of slavery was wrong and unfair. The book helped Britain stay out of the Civil War because its people wouldn?t allow intervention on behalf of the South. The Impending Crisis of the South, by Hinton R. Helper, southerner, tried to prove that the non-slave-holding Southern whites most hurt by slavery.
