During world war one gorizia turned from a beautiful peaceful place into a town of mayhem and death because of the war between Italians and the Austrian-Hungarians. Farewell to arms takes place in this city for the most part. This is where Henry meets Catherine and where there ?love? starts. Gorizia was ruined during WW1 because of the damage done by the Austrians and the terrible condition Italy in general was left in after war.
