French Crescent: Church and state were closely interwoven. During the 17th century, the French prime ministers, Cardinal Richelieu and Cardinal Mazarin, laid out a fundamentally Catholic imperial policy, and under their guidance, colonists constructed a second Catholic empire in North America. In 1674, Church and state collaborated in establishing the bishopric of Quebec, which founded local seminaries, oversaw the appointment and review of priests and laid the foundation of the resolutely catholic culture of New France. Had long lots, that stretched back from the rivers providing each family a share of good land to farm and frontage on the waterways. Landowners claimed privileges similar to those enjoyed by their aristocratic counterparts at home.
