However, this confrontation had been building up for years and had finally escalated to a full-frontal war. Tension included the election of Lincoln, the development of the abolition movement, and slavery which all accumulated into the Civil War. The Civil War started with southern dominance but half way through shifted to Union victories, The Civil War plagued the nation and killed many, as well as, destroying a way of life. The consequences of the war were severe: slavery no longer existed and the South would face new problem: Reconstruction.
